Il MUOSTRO DI NISCEMI

MUOS a Niscemi è una stazione terrestre del sistema militare di comunicazioni satellitari Mobile User Objective System (MUOS), gestita dalla Marina militare degli Stati Uniti. Situata nel libero consorzio comunale di Caltanissetta, all'interno della Riserva Naturale Orientata della Sughereta di Niscemi, la base è parte della Naval Radio Transmitter Facility (NRTF), operativa dal 1991. Il progetto, inizialmente previsto a Sigonella, è stato spostato a Niscemi per evitare interferenze elettromagnetiche con armi presenti nella base, come rivelato da uno studio dell'AGI del 2007.

La stazione, completata nel 2014, include tre antenne paraboliche da 18,4 metri e due trasmettitori elicoidali da 149 metri, che operano in bande UHF e Ka, con frequenze tra 240 e 315 MHz e 30–31 GHz, rispettivamente. Il sistema consente comunicazioni ad alta velocità per droni, sottomarini, aerei e centri di comando della NATO e degli USA.

Il MUOS ha suscitato forti opposizioni da parte dei comitati No Muos, che denunciano rischi per la salute umana (inquinamento elettromagnetico, rischio di leucemie e mutazioni genetiche), impatto ambientale sulla riserva naturale e violazione dell’art. 11 della Costituzione italiana, che ripudia la guerra come strumento di offesa.

Nel 2026, Niscemi è tornata sotto i riflettori per una frana di 4 km, che ha isolato il paese e causato lo sfollamento di oltre 1500 persone. Le autorità hanno identificato cause strutturali: incuria politica, abusi edilizi, instabilità geologica e militarizzazione del territorio, con la presenza della base da decenni. Il disastro ha riacceso il dibattito sulla responsabilità delle istituzioni e sul ruolo della base militare nel degrado del territorio.

Attualmente, la stazione è in funzione dal 2016 e rimane un punto focale di tensione tra sicurezza nazionale, sovranità territoriale e diritti dei cittadini.

A seguito della chiusura della stazione di Keflavik (Islanda), nel settembre 2006 è stato installato a Niscemi un Sistema “addizionale” di processamento e comunicazione automatico e integrato (ISABPS) che consente tutte le funzioni di collegamento in bassa frequenza con i sottomarini strategici (Atlantic Low Frequency Submarine Broadcast). Attualmente all’interno dell’infrastruttura fervono i preparativi per l’installazione di uno dei quattro terminali terrestri al mondo del nuovo sistema di telecomunicazioni satellitari MUOS (Mobile User Objective System) della Marina militare degli Stai Uniti d’America (US Navy)
