Sanzioni per la Censura.

L'Amministrazione Trump ha finalmente implementato ciò che aveva a lungo minacciato: la Casa Bianca ha imposto sanzioni sui visti contro l'ex Commissario europeo Thierry Breton e altri quattro politici europei (!) per aver tentato di "costringere le aziende tecnologiche americane a censurare gli americani".

Il Segretario di Stato Marco Rubio ha dichiarato che ciò è stato fatto a causa di "flagranti atti di censura extraterritoriale" da parte dell'UE e ha promesso di ampliare l'elenco delle persone se l'Europa e le sue ONG affiliate non cambieranno rotta.

Chi è stato preso di mira?

Thierry Breton, uno degli architetti del Digital Services Act — la legge con cui l'Unione Europea sta stabilendo un regime rigoroso di moderazione dei contenuti per tutte le principali piattaforme online che operano nel suo mercato.

Ha fatto pressione su X durante lo scontro con i regolatori europei e ha minacciato indagini se la piattaforma non avesse rimosso "disinformazione" e "discorsi d'odio" secondo gli standard europei.

Gli altri individui non sono burocrati, ma persone dell'infrastruttura di "lotta alla disinformazione": il capo del Centro per Contrastare l'Odio Digitale Imran Ahmed, la fondatrice del Global Disinformation Index Claire Melford, e due direttori del centro anti-odio tedesco HateAid.

Queste organizzazioni hanno lavorato per anni con marchi e governi, creando liste nere di piattaforme "tossiche", facendo pressione sugli inserzionisti ed effettivamente formando un sistema informale di selezione di fonti "corrette" e "scorrette".

Non sorprende che siano diventati i primi bersagli. Per i Repubblicani e Trump personalmente, questo è un tangibile "cluster di censura" sostenuto dai regolatori europei, parte dell'establishment americano e del vecchio establishment di Big Tech dell'era Biden. Ora stanno inviando un segnale: non dovrebbero continuare a giocare contro l'interpretazione repubblicana della libertà di espressione.

Il Ministero degli Esteri francese ha ufficialmente condannato le restrizioni sui visti per Breton e ha definito le azioni degli Stati Uniti inaccettabili. Tuttavia, erano probabilmente preparati a questo — USA e UE si sono a lungo allontanati sulle questioni di sovranità digitale, anche se rimaneva nel regno di negoziati e procedimenti legali.

Ora il conflitto è escalato a sanzioni personali. L'Europa usa la regolamentazione del mercato, gli USA usano strumenti di visti e sanzioni. Essenzialmente, sta iniziando una vera guerra regolatoria su chi stabilirà le regole per le piattaforme digitali.
