  • La fotografia su smartphone ha fatto passi da gigante negli ultimi anni, ma c’è un limite fisico con cui i produttori si scontrano da sempre: la gamma dinamica dei sensori CMOS. Una nuova (per il mondo smartphone) tecnologia, chiamata LOFIC, promette di cambiare le regole del gioco catturando un range dinamico enormemente più ampio in una singola esposizione, ne abbiamo parlato in un video dedicato sul nostro canale, vediamo per sommi capi di cosa si tratta e perché sarà protagonista dei prossimi anni nel mondo mobile.

    Piccola infarinatura
    Quando si inquadra una scena con zone molto luminose e zone in ombra, la coperta è inevitabilmente corta, difficilmente si possono ottenere dettagli e qualità nelle aree con grandi differenze di illuminazione. L’HDR ha tamponato il problema combinando più scatti a esposizioni diverse, ma introduce artefatti, ghosting sui soggetti in movimento e flickering nei video, specialmente quelli notturni con pannelli LED nell’inquadratura.

    Il LOFIC ha le potenzialità per essere la soluzione definitiva: è l’acronimo di Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor, una tecnologia applicata ai sensori fotografici che affronta alla radice il problema della gamma dinamica limitata dei sensori CMOS. L’idea di base è tanto elegante quanto efficace: affiancare a ciascun fotodiodo (il singolo pixel) un piccolo condensatore supplementare, capace di raccogliere gli elettroni in eccesso che normalmente andrebbero persi quando il pixel raggiunge la saturazione. In altre parole, là dove un pixel tradizionale si limita a restituire “bianco puro” perché ha ricevuto troppa luce, il condensatore LOFIC cattura il surplus e lo rende leggibile, estendendo di fatto la gamma dinamica verso le alte luci senza sacrificare le informazioni nelle ombre.

    Il vantaggio più significativo rispetto all’HDR classico, basato tipicamente su tecniche come il Dual Conversion Gain (DCG), è che tutto avviene in un’unica esposizione. Non servono più scatti multipli da fondere insieme e questo elimina alla radice i problemi di ghosting sulle foto con soggetti in movimento e di flickering nei video in HDR, un difetto particolarmente evidente nelle riprese notturne dove i pannelli LED sfarfallano a causa dei tempi di posa rapidi necessari per non bruciare le alte luci. Il software di elaborazione si ritrova così con tutte le informazioni necessarie già in un singolo fotogramma, con un vantaggio enorme sia in termini di qualità dell’immagine sia di carico computazionale.

    La tecnologia non è nata ieri: fu presentata da Panasonic nei primi anni 2000, con sviluppi significativi mostrati tra il 2013 e il 2016 in conferenze come l’ISSCC. Nel 2020 la divisione semiconduttori di Panasonic è stata acquisita da Nuvoton Technology Corporation, azienda taiwanese che tuttora detiene la proprietà intellettuale e porta avanti lo sviluppo. Nel video approfondiamo il funzionamento nel dettaglio con una spiegazione visiva e accessibile, per capire davvero cosa succede dentro al sensore.

    Chi la sta già usando e cosa aspettarsi nei prossimi anni
    Alcuni produttori si sono già mossi. Huawei ha integrato un sensore LOFIC su Pura 80 Ultra, mentre Xiaomi lo ha adottato sull’intera famiglia 17, dal Pro al Pro Max fino all’Ultra, sfruttando i sensori TheiaCel di OmniVision. Proprio OmniVision è tra le aziende più attive su questo fronte, e non è un caso: dal 2023 integra la tecnologia LOFIC nei sensori TheiaCel, il cui nome richiama Theia, dea greca madre del sole, della luna e dell’aurora, combinandola con il DCG ad alta sensibilità per massimizzare la gamma dinamica. La ragione di questo impegno ha un legame molto concreto con il settore automotive, dove OmniVision è uno dei principali fornitori di sensori: telecamere per la guida autonoma, dashcam e sistemi di assistenza alla guida richiedono sensori capaci di leggere perfettamente sia le ombre che le alte luci in ogni condizione, senza margine di errore.

    Per quanto riguarda il futuro prossimo, Sony dovrebbe introdurre un sensore LOFIC destinato alla fascia alta degli smartphone verso la fine del 2026, potenzialmente il modello LYT-838. Samsung è attesa con un proprio sensore LOFIC tra la fine del 2026 e l’inizio del 2027, mentre Apple starebbe sviluppando internamente un sensore LOFIC da 100 megapixel con debutto stimato tra il 2027 e il 2028.

    I primi risultati sugli smartphone, va detto, non sono ancora all’altezza delle aspettative: l’hardware c’è, ma il back-end software di elaborazione è estremamente complesso e richiede ancora parecchio affinamento, sia per le foto HDR che soprattutto per i video, in particolare quelli notturni. Una situazione che ricorda i primi tempi della fotografia computazionale, quando il potenziale era evidente ma serviva tempo perché gli algoritmi raggiungessero la maturità dell’hardware. Quando tutti i grandi produttori di sensori e di smartphone convergeranno su questa architettura, è però ragionevole attendersi un’accelerazione molto significativa.
