One out of ten women in their reproductive years suffer from PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease), a hormonal disorder. Hormonal imbalances, metabolism, and weight gain are common problems for women with PCOD. Thankfully, this weight can be managed with a few easy dietary adjustments and PCOD treatment in Mumbai. In this blog, we will discover the relation between PCOD and weight gain and tips for women to help control weight who are dealing with PCOD.

Relation Between Weight Gain and PCOD

A survey suggests that approximately half of all women with PCOD are overweight or obese. Women with PCOD are more likely to have fatty liver, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and elevated insulin levels because a high body mass index (BMI) is linked to numerous health problems. These women may also develop diabetes, heart disease, or stroke if their weight is not managed.

Tips for Women with High BMIs and PCOD

A nutritious diet can help you lose weight, reduce blood sugar, and improve high blood pressure and cholesterol. You can start with these six suggestions:

  • Keep an eye on the portions you eat. To determine the appropriate portion size, start reading the nutrition labels on packaged foods. Appropriate portion sizes are frequently much smaller than we realise. Reading labels can help you keep track of your daily caloric intake in addition to preventing overeating.

  • Consume foods high in fibre and whole grains. You must choose your carbs carefully if you want to avoid or control diabetes. Choose complex and nutrient-rich carbohydrates like those found in fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains because fibre helps regulate blood sugar levels and makes you feel fuller. Additionally, eating more fibre can help lower cholesterol.

  • Cut back on added sugars. Unnatural sweeteners add calories without providing any nutritional value, and too much sugar can cause obesity and other health issues. Consider using fruit or dark chocolate in place of candy, cake, or cookies.

  • Don't add too much salt to your food. It is best to eat more home-cooked meals, as the majority of sodium is put in meals prepared in restaurants. Additionally, keep in mind that a low-sodium diet is not that bad. Spices and herbs, either dried or fresh, add a lot of flavour.

  • Go for heart-healthy fats. Use olive oil, or oils derived from nuts or seeds, in place of vegetable oil. However, keep in mind that heart-healthy fats are high in calories, so eat them sparingly.

Are you gaining a lot of weight due to PCOD? Consult Dr. Chaitali Mahajan Trivedi, a renowned gynaecologist in Mumbai at Nanavati Superspeciality Hospital. To manage PCOD, she will recommend non-surgical options like oral contraceptives and diet modifications to manage weight. If both these options do not work, surgical options would be advised, i.e., laparoscopic ovarian drilling. Consult the expert gynaecologist today for more details on PCOD treatment.
