In modern well completion and stimulation operations, dissolvable plugs have become popular tools due to their ability to degrade without requiring mechanical removal. However, there is often confusion between dissolvable frac plugs and dissolvable bridge plugs. While they appear similar, their purposes and designs are different. Let’s break it down clearly.

1. Purpose and Function

  • Dissolvable Frac Plug:
    Used during multi-stage hydraulic fracturing, these plugs temporarily isolate zones within a horizontal wellbore. They allow operators to fracture one stage at a time from toe to heel. After the operation, the plug dissolves in downhole fluids, eliminating the need for mill-out.

  • Dissolvable Bridge Plug:
    Primarily used for temporary well isolation or zonal shutoff—not for fracturing. Bridge plugs isolate a section of the wellbore to test pressure, shut off flow, or perform remedial work. Like frac plugs, dissolvable versions disappear over time, simplifying wellbore cleanup.

2. Structural Differences

  • Frac Plugs are designed to withstand high pressure and high flow rates associated with fracking. They usually contain slip systems, sealing elements, and a ball seat to allow pressure buildup for stimulation.

  • Bridge Plugs may have a simpler construction, as they are mainly built for isolation rather than stimulation, and may not need to withstand intense hydraulic pumping.
