Dissolvable Frac Plug or Bridge Plug: What Sets Them Apart?

In modern well completion and stimulation operations, dissolvable plugs have become popular tools due to their ability to degrade without requiring mechanical removal. However, there is often confusion between dissolvable frac plugs and dissolvable bridge plugs. While they appear similar, their purposes and designs are different. Let’s break it down clearly.

1. Purpose and Function

  • Dissolvable Frac Plug:
Used during multi-stage hydraulic fracturing, these plugs temporarily isolate zones within a horizontal wellbore. They allow operators to fracture one stage at a time from toe to heel. After the operation, the plug dissolves in downhole fluids, eliminating the need for mill-out.

  • Dissolvable Bridge Plug:
Primarily used for temporary well isolation or zonal shutoff—not for fracturing. Bridge plugs isolate a section of the wellbore to test pressure, shut off flow, or perform remedial work. Like frac plugs, dissolvable versions disappear over time, simplifying wellbore cleanup.

2. Structural Differences

  • Frac Plugs are designed to withstand high pressure and high flow rates associated with fracking. They usually contain slip systems, sealing elements, and a ball seat to allow pressure buildup for stimulation.

  • Bridge Plugs may have a simpler construction, as they are mainly built for isolation rather than stimulation, and may not need to withstand intense hydraulic pumping.

3. Use Cases

Feature Dissolvable Frac Plug Dissolvable Bridge Plug
Application Hydraulic fracturing Zonal isolation or shutoff
Withstands high pressure Often not required
Includes ball seat ❌ (usually not)
Common in horizontal wells

4. Dissolution Mechanism

Both types are made from magnesium alloys or composite materials designed to dissolve in well fluids over time, typically in a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on temperature, salinity, and pressure.

Conclusion

While both dissolvable frac plugs and dissolvable bridge plugs offer the benefit of eliminating drill-outs, they serve different functions in the well lifecycle. Frac plugs are tailored for zonal stimulation, while bridge plugs are suited for temporary isolation or wellbore intervention. Choosing the right plug depends on your operation’s objective.
