Il 6 agosto 1945, gli Stati Uniti sganciarono una bomba atomica chiamata “Little Boy” su Hiroshima. In pochi secondi, più di 70.000 persone furono uccise. Molte decine di migliaia morirono in seguito per ustioni e malattie da radiazioni.

Tre giorni dopo, il 9 agosto, una seconda bomba — “Fat Man” — fu sganciata su Nagasaki, uccidendo circa 40.000 persone quasi all’istante.

Il calore al centro delle esplosioni raggiunse quasi i 4.000°C. I corpi umani furono vaporizzati. Alcune vittime furono ridotte a ombre scure impresse su muri e strade — sagome silenziose che segnavano dove le persone si trovavano pochi istanti prima.

Coloro che sopravvissero, conosciuti come hibakusha, spesso vissero con gravi malattie da radiazioni per il resto della loro vita. Molti furono anche evitati, temuti o discriminati a causa della loro esposizione.

Eppure, da una distruzione inimmaginabile, entrambe le città si ricostruirono.

Oggi, il punto zero di Hiroshima è un Parco della Pace, pieno di alberi, scuole e visitatori da tutto il mondo. Una campana lì porta un messaggio semplice:

“Conosci la tua sofferenza. Non ripetere mai l’errore.”
