PGA Tour Regulations on Rangefinders: The Latest Changes
In 2021, the PGA of America introduced a rule permitting the use of golf distance-measuring devices in its major championships. However, this rule does not extend to regular PGA Tour events, where rangefinders remain prohibited.
Under the PGA of America's guidelines, players and caddies may use rangefinders, but with restrictions:
- Only straight-line distances can be measured.
- Features such as slope-adjusted yardages, wind readings, and other enhanced data must be disabled.
- Rangefinder usage must not disrupt the pace of play, and penalties may apply for delays.
This rule change was implemented to speed up play by reducing reliance on yardage books and caddies. However, it remains a debated topic, with some arguing that traditional methods add strategic depth to the game.
