Unveiling Elden Ring's Mysteries: The Controversy Behind the 'Central Sea Theory'

While the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC promises a wealth of new content and lore for Elden Ring fans, it has also sparked debate about the true nature of the Realm of Shadow. The "central sea theory" suggests that this new area is simply a hidden part of the Lands Between, veiled by Marika. However, a closer look at the available evidence suggests a more complex reality.

Recommendation: Elden Ring Throwing Weapons Build

One of the primary arguments against the central sea theory lies in the size and scale of the Realm of Shadow. Overlaying the map of the Realm of Shadow onto the Lands Between reveals significant inconsistencies. The Cerulean Coast overlaps with Limgrave, the Jagged Peak covers the Divine Tower of Caelid, and the Shadowtree chalice sits directly on top of Leyndell. The sheer size of the Realm of Shadow makes it difficult to reconcile with the relatively small central sea area.

Moreover, the absence of connecting infrastructure presents a significant challenge to the central sea theory. If the Realm of Shadow was once an integral part of the Lands Between, one would expect to find evidence of roads, bridges, or ports that facilitated travel between the two areas. However, the existing road network in the Lands Between conspicuously avoids the central sea area, suggesting that it was never intended as a point of connection.

From a narrative perspective, the central sea theory also raises questions. If the Realm of Shadow was once visible and accessible, how could Marika have kept the secrets of her godhood and the Erdtree's origins hidden? The Great Tower of Enia would have been a prominent landmark, visible to all. Furthermore, it seems odd that no one in the Lands Between seems to know about the Hornsent or the Spiral Tower.

Miyazaki's own words also lend credence to the idea of a separate land. He has repeatedly emphasized the "separation" of the Shadowlands from the Lands Between, using the dramatic term "sundered" to describe their division. This suggests a more catastrophic and primordial event than a simple veiling.

While the central sea theory offers a compelling explanation, it is not without its flaws. The size discrepancies, the lack of connecting infrastructure, and the narrative inconsistencies all point to a more complex reality. Perhaps the Realm of Shadow is a separate land that was once physically linked to the Lands Between in a more distant past.

To further prepare yourself for exploring the depths of the Realm of Shadow, you might consider strengthening your character. Remember you can buy Elden Ring Items to gain an advantage against the challenges ahead.
