Cold weather is the natural enemy of the lead-acid battery. As temperatures drop, the chemical reactions inside a battery slow down, significantly reducing its "Cold Cranking Amps" (CCA). Simultaneously, diesel engine oil thickens, requiring more power to turn the engine over. This creates a double-jeopardy scenario where the battery is at its weakest exactly when the engine is hardest to start.

A spring starter is unaffected by ambient temperature. The physical properties of the steel spring remain consistent whether it is 40°C or -30°C. Since the energy is stored mechanically rather than chemically, you get the same high-torque output regardless of the frost.
