Few things are more frustrating than a big old diesel engine that cranks but fails to fire. This common issue leaves equipment stranded, but the solution often lies in diagnosing fuel system or battery problems—two areas prone to wear in aging engines. Ignoring the issue can lead to costly damage or prolonged downtime.
Start with the battery: test its voltage with a multimeter. A reading below 12.6V means it’s undercharged, so recharge or replace it. Corroded or loose terminals can also restrict current flow, so clean them with baking soda and water and tighten connections. If the battery is fine, turn to the fuel system.
Old diesel fuel degrades into sludge and sediment, clogging filters and injectors. Drain old fuel, replace the fuel filter, and inspect lines for leaks or blockages. Use a fuel system cleaner to clear stubborn deposits. For engines with chronic issues, a spring starter provides extra cranking power to overcome fuel delivery delays, ensuring combustion kicks off smoothly.
