What is methandienone used for?

Methandienone, also known as Dianabol, is an anabolic androgenic steroid (AAS) that has generated much controversy in the medical and sports fields. Developed in the 1950s by Dr. John Ziegler and marketed by Ciba Pharmaceuticals, methandienone was initially designed for therapeutic purposes, particularly to treat muscle wasting. It quickly gained popularity among bodybuilders and athletes for its potent muscle-building properties, often being hailed as one of the most effective oral steroids for increasing muscle mass and strength.

This drug belongs to the class of synthetic AAS and is a derivative of testosterone. Safe use of Dianabol for bodybuilding is generally prescribed for specific conditions such as hypogonadism and other disorders that cause muscle wasting. However, due to its high potential for abuse and significant side effects, its medical use has been limited over the years. Research on methandienone has declined considerably since the 1970s, primarily due to its classification as a controlled substance in many countries.

How to Use Methandienone?

Methandienone is usually administered orally in tablet form, but it is also available in injectable form. Oral administration produces a relatively rapid onset of action, and users typically notice noticeable effects within the first week of use. Dosage can vary considerably depending on individual goals and experience with anabolic steroids. For beginners, the usual dose is between 15 and 30 mg per day, while experienced users can take up to 50 mg per day. However, these higher doses significantly increase the risk of adverse effects.

The drug is generally administered in 4- to 6-week cycles. Long-term use is not recommended due to its hepatotoxicity: methandienone is highly toxic to the liver and can cause severe liver damage. Methandienone is often combined with other anabolic steroids to maximize muscle mass gains and minimize side effects. Post-cycle therapy (PCT) is highly recommended after a methandienone cycle to restore natural testosterone production and mitigate potential side effects.

What are the side effects of methandienone?

Although methandienone is effective for muscle growth, it has numerous potential side effects that should not be overlooked. One of the most concerning is liver toxicity. Prolonged use or use at high doses can lead to liver damage and even liver cancer. Regular liver function tests are recommended for anyone using this drug.

Another significant side effect is its impact on cardiovascular health. Methandienone can cause an increase in bad cholesterol (LDL) and a decrease in good cholesterol (HDL), increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes. Additionally, it can cause high blood pressure.

Hormonal imbalances are also a concern. Since methandienone converts to estrogen in the body, it can cause gynecomastia (the development of breast tissue in men) and fluid retention, leading to bloating and high blood pressure. Suppression of natural testosterone production is another issue; without proper post-cycle therapy, users may experience testicular atrophy and decreased libido.

Other common side effects include acne, oily skin, hair loss (especially in people prone to male pattern baldness), and mood changes, such as increased aggression and irritability.

Other Medications That Affect Methandienone

Several medications can interact with methandienone, either amplifying its effects or increasing the risk of side effects. One of the most critical interactions is that with blood thinners. Methandienone can enhance the effects of these medications, increasing the risk of bleeding.

Other anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) can also interact with methandienone, sometimes leading to more serious side effects, such as increased liver toxicity and hormonal imbalances. For example, combining methandienone with other oral steroids such as Anadrol can be particularly harmful to the liver.

Certain heart medications, such as beta-blockers and calcium channel blockers, can also interact with methandienone. Given its potential to increase blood pressure, people with preexisting heart conditions should exercise extreme caution and consult a healthcare professional before using this steroid.
