    A soli 23 anni, Leopold Aschenbrenner ha raccolto oltre 1,5 miliardi di dollari per il suo hedge fund Situational Awareness, puntando su titoli legati all’intelligenza artificiale e ottenendo rendimenti straordinari
    Leopold Aschenbrenner è emerso lo scorso anno come un precoce influencer nel campo dell’intelligenza artificiale dopo aver pubblicato un manifesto molto letto.     La società di Aschenbrenner, Situational Awareness, con sede a San Francisco, ora gestisce oltre 1,5 miliardi di dollari, secondo fonti informate. Poi ha deciso di cimentarsi nella selezione di titoli azionari. Il 23enne, senza alcuna esperienza professionale negli investimenti, ha rapidamente raccolto più fondi per un hedge fund di quanto riescano a fare la maggior parte dei gestori con pedigree quando decidono di mettersi in proprio. Con le valutazioni di Nvidia, OpenAI e altre aziende legate all’intelligenza artificiale in continua ascesa, aumentano anche gli investimenti negli hedge fund che sperano di cavalcare l’onda dell’AI. La società di Aschenbrenner, Situational Awareness, con sede a San Francisco, ora gestisce oltre 1,5 miliardi di dollari, secondo fonti informate. Ha descritto la società come un «think tank sull’AI». La sua strategia prevede di puntare su titoli globali che possono trarre beneficio dallo sviluppo della tecnologia AI, come aziende di semiconduttori, infrastrutture e energia, insieme a investimenti in alcune startup, tra cui Anthropic. Ha detto agli investitori di voler compensare queste posizioni con piccole scommesse al ribasso su settori che potrebbero essere lasciati indietro. Situational Awareness ha ottenuto un rendimento del 47% al netto delle commissioni nella prima metà dell’anno, secondo una delle fonti. Nello stesso periodo, l’S&P 500 è cresciuto di circa il 6%, dividendi inclusi, mentre un indice di hedge fund tecnologici compilato dalla società di ricerca PivotalPath ha guadagnato circa il 7%. Aschenbrenner, originario della Germania, ha lavorato brevemente come ricercatore presso OpenAI prima di esserne allontanato. Ha chiamato la sua società Situational Awareness in onore del saggio di 165 pagine che ha scritto sul potenziale e i rischi dell’intelligenza artificiale. Ha reclutato Carl Shulman, un altro intellettuale nel campo dell’AI che in passato ha lavorato per il fondo macro hedge fund di Peter Thiel come direttore della ricerca. Tra i finanziatori della società figurano Patrick e John Collison, i fratelli miliardari fondatori della società di pagamenti Stripe, così come Daniel Gross e Nat Friedman, che Mark Zuckerberg ha recentemente incaricato di aiutare a guidare gli sforzi di Meta nell’ambito dell’AI. Altri lanci recenti includono un hedge fund focalizzato sull’AI di Value Aligned Research Advisors (Var), una società d’investimento con sede a Princeton, New Jersey, fondata dagli ex quants Ben Hoskin e David Field. Il fondo, lanciato a marzo, ha già raccolto circa 1 miliardo di dollari in asset, secondo una fonte informata. Var gestisce anche circa 2 miliardi di dollari in altre strategie di investimento focalizzate sull’AI. Tra gli investitori di Var c’è anche la fondazione filantropica del co-fondatore di Facebook, Dustin Moskovitz, secondo documenti regolatori esaminati dalla società di analisi dati Old Well Labs. Anche hedge fund più affermati stanno entrando in questo campo. Lo scorso anno, Steve Cohen ha incaricato uno dei suoi gestori di portafoglio presso Point72 Asset Management, Eric Sanchez, di avviare un hedge fund incentrato sull’AI, che Cohen avrebbe finanziato con 150 milioni di dollari di capitale proprio. Il fondo, chiamato Turion, in onore del teorico dell’AI Alan Turing, ora supera i 2 miliardi di dollari in asset, secondo fonti informate. Turion ha registrato un rendimento di circa 11% quest’anno fino a luglio, dopo un guadagno di circa 7% solo nel mese scorso, hanno detto le fonti. Non sorprende che stiano nascendo numerosi fondi tematici per capitalizzare sull’entusiasmo attorno all’intelligenza artificiale. Negli anni passati, gli hedge fund specializzati nella transizione verso l’energia pulita e negli investimenti con un approccio ambientale, sociale e di governance aziendale (Esg) si sono moltiplicati in risposta alla domanda dei clienti. Tuttavia, identificare un tema vincente non è la stessa cosa che saperlo tradare bene. I gusti degli investitori possono essere volubili; molti hedge fund Esg di rilievo si sono ridimensionati o hanno chiuso i battenti. Il calo dei mercati seguito al rilascio, a gennaio, di un modello linguistico avanzato e a basso costo da parte della società cinese DeepSeek ha mostrato quanto siano fragili le valutazioni delle aziende considerate vincitrici nell’ambito dell’AI, anche se da allora il mercato è rimbalzato con forza. Gli investitori focalizzati sull’AI sostengono che la tendenza a lungo termine dello sviluppo e dell’adozione sia inevitabile, anche se lungo il percorso ci possono essere degli ostacoli. Con un numero limitato di aziende quotate in borsa che operano oggi nell’economia adiacente all’AI, i fondi specializzati nella selezione di titoli spesso finiscono per accumulare le stesse posizioni tra loro e con hedge fund più generalisti. Vistra, un produttore di energia che fornisce energia ai data center dell’AI, era una delle prime tre posizioni negli Stati Uniti sia per Situational Awareness sia per Var Advisors al 31 marzo, secondo le loro più recenti dichiarazioni sui titoli. Altri gestori di hedge fund stanno lanciando fondi per investire in aziende private e startup nel campo dell’AI. Atreides Management di Gavin Baker ha collaborato con Valor Equity Partners per lanciare all’inizio di quest’anno un fondo di venture capital che ha raccolto milioni da investitori tra cui il fondo sovrano dell’Oman. Entrambe le società hanno inoltre investito separatamente in xAI di Elon Musk. Almeno un gestore di portafoglio sta pianificando un hedge fund sull’AI come veicolo di rilancio.
