Main Causes of Steel Wire Rope Failure

Steel wire ropes, due to their high strength and corrosion resistance, are widely used in various fields. For example, in mechanical manufacturing, steel wire ropes are used in cranes to withstand enormous pulling forces and ensure the safe lifting of heavy objects. In the shipping industry, steel wire ropes are used for ship lifting, tugboats, etc., to ensure safe and efficient navigation. In the mining industry, steel wire ropes are used to pull large equipment, improving production efficiency.  

The main causes of steel wire rope failure include reduction in cross-sectional area, changes in quality, deformation, and sudden breakage. These reasons can be summarized into the following aspects:

Reduction in Cross-Sectional Area: During use, the cross-sectional area of the steel wire rope may gradually decrease due to wear, corrosion, and other factors, leading to a decrease in the strength and load-bearing capacity of the steel wire rope and increasing the risk of breakage.

Changes in Quality: Changes in the quality of the steel wire rope may be due to damage to the internal structure or corrosion, resulting in changes in its physical and chemical properties, affecting its performance and service life.

Deformation: During use, the steel wire rope may undergo deformation, such as twisting or bending, which can reduce its original design performance and increase the risk of breakage.

Sudden Breakage: In some extreme cases, such as overloading or impact, the steel wire rope may suddenly break. This sudden breakage is often due to the instantaneous stress exceeding the ultimate strength of the steel wire rope.

In addition to the above reasons, the failure of steel wire ropes can also be caused by improper use, insufficient maintenance, and environmental factors (such as temperature, corrosive gases). To extend the service life of steel wire ropes, regular inspection and maintenance are necessary, overloading should be avoided, the working environment should be kept dry and clean, and damaged steel wire ropes should be replaced in time.
