Key Equipment Used in White Spirit Production Plants
Producing high-quality white spirit requires a combination of distillation, catalytic treatment, and precise process control. The equipment used in these plants is specially designed to handle flammable hydrocarbons while maintaining operational safety and efficiency.

Distillation Columns
Distillation columns, particularly fractionating columns, are the backbone of white spirit production. They separate feedstocks into different boiling ranges, enabling the production of light, medium, and heavy white spirit grades. Columns are equipped with trays or packing to increase contact between vapor and liquid phases, enhancing separation efficiency.
Hydro-Treatment Reactors
Hydro-treatment reactors are fixed-bed vessels that allow feedstock to react with hydrogen over catalysts. These reactors are designed for high temperature and pressure operation, and the catalyst beds are carefully arranged to maximize contact with hydrogen. Hydrogen compressors, heat exchangers, and circulation pumps are integral to reactor operation.
Heat Exchangers and Pre-Heaters
Efficient heat management is critical in both fractionation and hydro-treatment. Pre-heaters bring feedstock to the desired temperature before entering the column or reactor. Heat exchangers recover energy from product streams, improving overall plant efficiency and reducing fuel consumption.
Hydrogen Supply and Gas Treating Units
Hydro-treatment requires a reliable hydrogen supply. Plants use hydrogen compressors and storage vessels to maintain pressure. Additionally, gas treating units remove impurities such as H₂S and NH₃ from the hydrogen stream to protect catalysts and ensure reaction efficiency.
Product Storage and Blending Tanks
After treatment, white spirit is stored in dedicated tanks that prevent contamination and oxidation. Blending tanks are used to achieve specific product grades by mixing different cuts or treated fractions. These tanks are equipped with agitation systems to ensure uniformity.
Control Systems and Safety Equipment
Modern white spirit plants rely on advanced distributed control systems (DCS) for monitoring temperature, pressure, flow, and composition. Safety equipment such as flare systems, pressure relief valves, and fire suppression systems is critical to prevent accidents in these flammable hydrocarbon environments.
By integrating all these pieces of equipment, white spirit plants can maintain consistent product quality, comply with environmental standards, and operate safely and efficiently.
