3. Khodiyar Mandir – Guardian Goddess of Gohils

The Shri Khodiyar Mandir, located in Rajpara near Bhavnagar, is dedicated to Khodiyar Mata, a powerful folk goddess revered especially by the Gohil dynasty and many Rajput and farming communities in Gujarat. Worshipped since the 13th century, Khodiyar Mata is seen as a protector, often depicted riding a crocodile—her divine mount. The original shrine was built by Maharaja Wakhatsinhji, and later expanded by Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji, who also developed nearby infrastructure including roads, a railway station, a hospital, and a water system to support the growing number of pilgrims. In 1953, the Shri Khodiyar Mandir Trust was established to manage temple affairs. Today, the temple is a major pilgrimage site and continues to be overseen by the Gohil royal family, preserving its sacred and cultural heritage.
