Eppure, esiste una ferita ancora più silenziosa e nascosta, perché raramente percepita nella sua interezza. È la ferita della cancellazione. Un conflitto non porta con sé soltanto morti e dolore: diventa sinonimo di “annullamento”, di rimozione totale della memoria, della storia, dell’identità stessa di un popolo. Come se la sua cultura non avesse mai avuto diritto di esistere. Come se le sue pietre, le sue strade, i suoi teatri e le sue biblioteche non avessero mai parlato. Dal 2022 abbiamo pianto la distruzione del teatro di Odessa, simbolo di arte e bellezza in tempo di guerra. Ebbene, oggi lo stesso copione si ripete nella Gaza che non riconosce più se stessa, dove è difficile persino trovare qualcosa da salvare, se non la tenacia di chi, ancora, sopravvive fra le macerie. E sia chiaro: nessun edificio, nessuna chiesa, nessun archivio potrà mai valere quanto una vita umana. 👉 Ma distruggere i luoghi della memoria significa anche questo: lasciare che la verità di un popolo venga raccontata da altri. Da un sistema mediatico e storiografico che non può garantire il sacrosanto principio di imparzialità. Ci resta allora solo l’immaginazione. Immaginare ciò che non esiste più — o che forse tornerà a vivere, ma secondo i canoni della speculazione e dei progetti di chi costruirà nuovi viadotti, resort, infrastrutture che nulla hanno a che vedere con la memoria palestinese. E non è retorica. Secondo il report “All That is Lost” dell’organizzazione PEN America, sono oltre 300 i siti culturali distrutti o gravemente danneggiati a Gaza. Fra essi, la casa di Yasser Arafat, trasformata in centro culturale dopo la sua morte, oggi ridotta in rovina. Il Centro Culturale Rashad El Shawa, dove negli anni ’90 si discuteva di pace con Bill Clinton, è stato raso al suolo nel novembre 2024. E ancora la libreria di Samir Mansour, simbolo di resilienza culturale, e la Moschea Omari, che custodiva 20.000 volumi antichi — oggi polvere. Polvere come il pavimento a mosaico della Chiesa bizantina di Jabalia, costruita nel 444 d.C., testimone di secoli di convivenza religiosa e di storia condivisa. Colpita anch’essa, cancellata. E così, la cultura scivola via, insieme alla memoria. Perché la distruzione del patrimonio artistico non è mai solo un “danno collaterale”: è la seconda morte di un popolo, quella che lo priva della sua voce e del suo diritto di esistere nel racconto della storia.
