Se n’è andata in silenzio, ieri pomeriggio, in una stanza d’ospedale, dove era stata trasferita dal carcere in seguito al precipitare delle sue condizioni.

Se n’è andata al 238esimo di uno sciopero della fame con cui chiedeva un processo equo in un Paese, la Turchia, in cui l’equità e la giustizia sono concetti inesistenti. Specie se sei donna. Specie se sei un’avvocata per i diritti umani. Specie se non pieghi la schiena di fronte a un potere che vorrebbe tapparti la bocca.

*È morta così, Ebru Timtik, di fame e di ingiustizia. Il suo cuore si è fermato semplicemente perché non aveva più nulla da pompare in un corpo scarnificato dall’inedia.*

È morta per difendere il suo diritto ad un giusto processo, dopo essere stata condannata a 13 anni, insieme ad altri 18 avvocati come lei, detenuti con l’accusa di terrorismo, solo per aver difeso altre persone accusate dello stesso crimine.

È morta come Ibrahim e come Helin e come Mustafa del Grup Yorum, morti dopo 300 giorni di digiuno per combattere la stessa accusa.

È morta combattendo con il proprio corpo, fino alle estreme conseguenze, una battaglia che nella Turchia di Erdogan non è più possibile combattere con una parola, un voto, una manifestazione di piazza.

È morta come fanno gli eroi, sacrificando la propria vita per i diritti di tutti.

C’è solo un modo per celebrare la memoria di questa grande donna: non restare zitti. Far arrivare la sua voce il più lontano possibile, dove lei non può più arrivare.

Ci sono idee così forti capaci di sopravvivere anche alla morte.

Addio Ebru. Viva Ebru.

She passed away silently yesterday afternoon, in a hospital room where she had been transferred from prison following her deteriorating condition.

She died on the 238th day of a hunger strike demanding a fair trial in a country, Turkey, where fairness and justice are nonexistent. Especially if you're a woman. Especially if you're a human rights lawyer. Especially if you don't bow your head to a power that would silence you.

She died defending her right to a fair trial, after being sentenced to 13 years, along with 18 other lawyers like her, detained on terrorism charges, simply for having defended others accused of the same crime.

She died like Ibrahim, Helin, and Mustafa of Grup Yorum, who died after 300 days of fasting to fight the same accusation.

She died fighting with her own body, to the very end, a battle that in Erdogan's Turkey can no longer be fought with a word, a vote, or a street demonstration.

She died as heroes do, sacrificing her life for the rights of all.

There is only one way to celebrate the memory of this great woman: not to remain silent. To make her voice heard as far as possible, where she can no longer reach.

There are ideas so strong that they can survive even death.
