    Il progetto Ribirth, candidato al James Dyson Award 2025, sfrutta un sistema di AI che attiva misure estreme di sicurezza quando l'impatto è ormai inevitabile

    Il tragico incidente del volo 171 di Air India precipitato ad Ahmedabad il 12 giugno scorso ha sconvolto il mondo. I motori del Boeing 787 sono stati spenti da uno dei due piloti appena il velivolo è decollato: le leve che controllano il flusso del carburante sono state spostate da «run» a «cutoff» bloccando il passaggio di cherosene. Per il Boeing 787 di Air India è stato impossibile recuperare la situazione. Nell’impatto sono morte 270 persone: 241 tra passeggeri (si è salvato soltanto uno) e membri dell’equipaggio, e altre 29 che si trovavano nella mensa universitaria contro la quale si è schiantato il velivolo.

    Da quel momento di enorme dolore è nato il progetto Rebirth. Due ingegneri aeronautici del Birla Institute of Technology and Science in India hanno sviluppato un sistema che potrebbe contribuire a prevenire simili incidenti con enormi airbag esterni dall'aspetto di giganteschi pop corn controllati dall'intelligenza artificiale. L'invenzione è candidata del James Dyson Award, premio che riconosce idee con un impatto globale (il vincitore sarà proclamato il 5 novembre).

    Un sistema di intelligenza artificiale rileva potenziali guasti e nel giro di 2 secondi apre il sistema di airbag (Rebirth)

    Il funzionamento di Rebirth prevede sensori che monitorano costantemente altitudine, velocità, motori, direzione, incendi e reazione dei piloti. Quando l'incidente è ormai inevitabile, con il velivolo a meno di 900 metri dal suolo, il sistema attiva automaticamente gli airbag, formando un bozzolo protettivo capace di assorbire l'energia dell'impatto e ridurre i danni. All'impatto si attivano lampeggianti a infrarossi e Gps per facilitare la localizzazione dei rottami ai soccorritori. Rebirth può essere aggiunto ad aerei esistenti o integrato ai nuovi. «Vogliamo aiutare le persone a sopravvivere agli incidenti, dare una possibilità anche dopo un fallimento» raccontano Eshel Wasim e Dharsan Srinivasan, le due menti dietro al progetto.
